Case History: Contoocook, New Hampshire
The precinct of Contoocook, New Hampshire needed a low-maintenance, chemical-free way to comply with regulations imposed by the Surface Water Treatment Rule (SWTR), including mandated protection against Giardia. But before making a firm decision, this community of 1500 did its research — then chose Kinetico Incorporated to develop a system they could count on. |

The Challenge
Contoocook’s supply source, Bear Pond, was an unfiltered surface water source presenting relatively low turbidities averaging under 0.5 NTU, with highs running to 3.0 NTU. A pilot study found no other significant problems requiring treatment; water color, pH and overall quality were good. Daily demand on the system averaged 120,000 gpd delivered to 500 connections, but demand also varied based on the season and weather conditions.
The Solution
Working with Provan & Lorber, Inc. of Contoocook, Kinetico responded with a fully automated pressure filtration system which eliminated chemical use. Two trains of four 24” diameter tanks containing Macrolite® ceramic media were used to meet the demand and the state’s requirement for 100 percent capacity redundancy. A new, 450,000 gallon tank provided additional storage capacity.
The Result
Without adding personnel or increasing man-hours, Contoocook’s new water filtration plant supplies 500 customers with an average of 60,000 - 200,000 gpd of filtered water — 300,000 gpd during peak demand periods. A programmable logic controller monitors system performance around the clock, while turbidimeters monitor inlet and outlet water quality. |

I spend about 10-30 minutes in the morning checking on the system. Sometimes I check it again in the evening, even though I don’t have to. You see, I’d rather the townspeople didn’t know exactly how easy Kinetico has made my job. Steve Clough, Contoocook Village Precinct Superintendent | |
